What Is RF Microneedling?

Microneedling and radiofrequency come together to form the powerhouse treatment known as RF microneedling. This innovative technique uses a device equipped with fine needles to create controlled microchannels on the skin’s surface. At the same time, radiofrequency energy is emitted through the needles, targeting deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. The combined effects of microneedling and radiofrequency aim to deliver a more youthful, firmer, and smoother skin appearance.

  • Reduce Hyperpigmentation
  • Diminish Wrinkles and Fine Lines

What to Expect With RF Microneedling Treatment

While some steps of the actual treatment process can vary based upon the specific treatment type, patient and provider preference, and other factors, you can still expect your RF microneedling sessions to follow a general pattern.

First, your provider will prepare the treatment area by cleaning and disinfecting the skin, typically with alcohol. Then, the area will be numbed using either a topical or local anesthetic in order to assure a painless procedure. Next, the treatment will be applied. Most sessions take between just a few minutes to half an hour, varying in duration depending on the size of the area, issues being addressed, and so on. Finally, you will be monitored for a short period to ensure you respond well to treatment. In some cases, your provider may apply a serum or other topical product to address any possible irritation and/or enhance results.

Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of RF microneedling, you can drive yourself home from each session and continue your daily routine without having to deal with stringent post-op restrictions or lengthy downtime. As always, it’s best to confer with your provider to determine both the exact process you can expect as well as your personalized aftercare recommendations.

How to Prepare for RF Microneedling

There are general steps that everyone can take to prepare for a successful RF microneedling regimen, and then there are more specific recommendations that should be determined between you and your provider.

For the majority of patients, standard skin care best practices will help to keep the treatment area well-prepared for treatment (not to mention healthier in general). These practices include, but are not limited to:

  • Minimizing sun exposure
  • Avoiding use of irritating products
  • Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle (diet, sleep, exercise)

There is also a separate set of recommendations relating to the time window immediately leading up to your treatment (either the day of or 1-2 days before) that your provider may issue, including the following:

  • Avoid caffeine
  • Do not undergo any dermabrasion, laser, and/or chemical peels within at least 10-12 weeks prior to surgery
  • Avoid heavy meals
  • Arrive without makeup
  • Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, and other supplements or topicals as directed
  • Avoid blood thinning medications as directed

By consistently following these guidelines, you can bolster both the safety and effectiveness of your treatments.

RF Microneedling Cost

Determining even a ballpark figure of how much you can expect to pay for RF microneedling is very difficult without taking into account your unique health status and presentation, among many other factors. Additionally, the region in which the facility is located, their fees, and the specifics of your treatment (i.e., which of the above approaches you use) can all affect cost.

Typically, insurance carriers will not cover RF microneedling, as it is largely considered an elective cosmetic procedure. However, RF microneedling is sometimes used to facilitate the healing process following traumatic injury that leaves unsightly scars. In these cases, insurance is more likely to offer partial or complete coverage. Whichever boat you’re in, it’s never a bad idea to familiarize yourself with your policy as it regards microneedling coverage. If it looks like you may be covered, make sure to carefully review all of the requirements, including pre-authorization.

Pairing RF Microneedling With Other Treatments

As part of a comprehensive rejuvenation regimen, RF microneedling can team up with other cosmetic treatments to accelerate key processes involved with hydrating and repairing the skin. In some cases, RF Microneedling can even enhance the effectiveness of other treatments, and vice versa.

These treatments include, but are not limited to:

Chemical peels: Well-established for its ability to powerfully exfoliate the skin, pairing chemical peel treatment with RF microneedling empowers you to enhance skin tone, texture, and overall health at multiple layers.

Injectables: Both neuromodulators like Botox and filler injections can be used in conjunction with RF microneedling to provide highly customizable results right where you need them.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): The controlled “micro-injuries” caused by RF microneedling, when combined with the collagen-stimulating action of platelet-rich-plasma injection, form a very powerful combination that kick-starts your body’s natural healing processes.

It’s important to note that these additional treatments may need to be spaced out from your RF microneedling treatments, and they may affect both your prep and aftercare routines. If you’re interested in combining treatments, Dr. Moradzadeh will present your options and collaborate with you to create a safe, effective, and convenient treatment plan.

Prolong Your Results With Proven Practices

“Gentle” is the operative word when it comes to maximizing your results with RF microneedling. Whether you concluded your treatments a week ago or several months in the past, mitigating your skin’s exposure to various irritants and stressors as much as possible is key to prolonging results. These include powerful and/or irritating products, sun exposure, regular alcohol and cigarette use, poor diet and sleep, and inconsistent hygiene practices.

While exercise is perfectly safe after RF microneedling, the opening of pores (in that context) and excessive sweating can negatively impact the skin over time. Regular cleansing and more moderate-intensity exercise can help to significantly mitigate these effects without sacrificing your fitness routine.

A Few Questions About RF Microneedling

Is RF Microneedling Painful?

While RF needling is designed to be as comfortable as possible, individual experiences may vary. There may be sensations of warmth as well as scratching or prickling. To minimize discomfort, a numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area 30 minutes before the treatment starts.

What Can I Expect After My RF Microneedling Treatment?

After undergoing microneedling with RF, it’s typical to experience some redness and some swelling in the treated areas. These symptoms usually subside within one to two days. You may also notice that your skin feels tighter immediately after the treatment.

What Is the Post-Treatment Protocol for RF Microneedling?

Post-treatment, you should avoid direct sun exposure and wear a high-SPF sunscreen to protect the treated areas. You should also avoid strenuous exercise for a couple of days to minimize swelling. Skin hydrating and soothing products may be recommended to enhance the healing process.

How Long Do RF Microneedling Results Last?

The longevity of the results can vary from person to person, but typically, the effects of an RF microneedling treatment can last for several months or more. Over time, maintenance sessions may be recommended to sustain the results.

How Many RF Microneedling Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your specific skin concerns and desired outcomes. Generally, patients see noticeable improvements after one treatment, but for more profound changes, multiple sessions may be recommended.

Who Is Eligible for RF Microneedling Treatments?

Due to its discreet and nonsurgical nature, RF microneedling is well-tolerated by a very broad range of patients with different medical backgrounds. However, there are still some factors which may harm your eligibility, including active skin infections, bleeding problems, compromised immunity, and other issues. Consult with your provider to clearly determine your eligibility for RF microneedling.
