What to Do About Hair Loss

People normally shed 50-100 hairs each day, but if you’re losing more hair each day 一 and your hair growth cycles have stopped 一 you may be dealing with hair loss rather than regular shedding. Hormones, hereditary hair loss, tight hairstyles, vitamin deficiencies, and some medications are just a few potential causes of hair loss.

Regardless of the cause, hair loss can impact your self-esteem. Thankfully, there are several treatment options available at AM Facial Plastics, with locations in Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills, California. Here, Dr. Arash Moradzadeh discusses the hair loss treatments he offers and steps you can take on your own when dealing with hair loss.

NeoGraftⓇ

Hair transplants have been used since 1939, but innovative technology continually improves the process and success rate of hair transplants. NeoGraft, which is an innovative and automated hair transplant technique, uses the follicular unit extraction (FUE) process.

During this treatment, an automated system extracts individual hair follicles rather than strips of tissue. NeoGraft’s advanced process leads to less tissue damage and trauma, especially when compared to traditional transplant methods. This leads to more successful hair transplants.

Supplements

In addition to hair transplants, supplements can support healthy hair growth from the inside out. At AM Facial Plastics, we offer two supplements that address hair loss:

Nutrifol

Nutrifol contains vitamins, biotin, keratin, resveratrol, and palm oil. One clinical study showed that Nutrifol improved hair growth in 80% of participants. The study also highlighted that those who took Nutrifol supplements noticed thicker hair as well as improved hair growth rate.

Viviscal

Viviscal is a protein-rich supplement that contains the AminoMar® marine complex, with ingredients that support healthy hair growth. This non-drug supplement also helps boost hair volume.

Laser light therapy

Laser light therapy is a nonsurgical hair loss treatment. During a laser light therapy session, Dr. Moradzadeh directs concentrated light onto your scalp to stimulate cell growth. Laser light therapy:

  • Improves circulation
  • Boosts hair growth
  • Restores volume
  • Improves the appearance of your hair

We perform most laser light therapy treatments in our office, but take-home devices are an option as well.

Microneedling

Microneedling is well-known for its ability to improve the texture and appearance of your facial skin, but the benefits don’t stop there. This procedure also plays a role in hair restoration treatments. Microneedling supports hair growth by:

  • Reducing inflammation on your scalp
  • Slowing down hair loss
  • Encouraging your scalp to produce new cells

Microneedling creates tiny channels in your skin, allowing compounded scalp medications to penetrate deeply. The combination of microneedling and compounded scalp medications can help treat any underlying scalp conditions that affect hair growth. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can also be combined with microneedling treatments.

Healthy hair habits you can adopt today

In addition to microneedling, hair transplants, and supplements, you can make lifestyle modifications to support a healthy scalp and hair.

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamin A, vitamin D, and B vitamins
  • Wash and condition your hair regularly
  • Limit heat styling, which can damage hair
  • Avoid wearing hairstyles that are too tight, which can cause breakage
  • Wash your scalp and gently massage it with your fingertips
  • Use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle hair
  • Don’t brush wet hair as that can increase hair breakage
  • Brush your hair before you shower
